I had this Muscovy duck, Norman, whom I loved dearly. I used to live on a property that had a small pond in the front. One day, during a particularly wild storm, Norman appeared in the yard and my son coaxed him over to the pond. Norman took up residence with us.
Before long, I got him a dog crate that I put at the end of the dock. Norman built a nest and laid 14 eggs, but we still called him Norman because we didn’t want to cause any gender confusion, and we just wanted to accept him as he was.
Norman would wait until I got home from work, and as soon as he heard me open the garage door, he would fly up for dinner. I would pet him while he ate, then he would fly back to the pond.
All of this is to say that I was thinking about Norman when I did this piece. And about baseball.
