When I was growing up, my mother would see things in books or on television of something - anything in Europe and say “No one knows how to do that kind of work anymore” or “That kind of Old World Charm is just not seen anywhere but Europe.”

Or maybe Epcot.

Mom thought everything was impossible, and if it was possible, it could not possibly compare to the work that was done in Europe. So I thought about her and her slightly snobby ideas about creativity and craftsmanship, knowing full well whenever she sees my work she asks why can’t I just do some nice watercolors of barns or seascapes that people can understand. You know, like they do in Europe.
